Grace & Karl's Five Bridge Inn Wedding - Rehoboth, MA
Grace and Karl got married at Five Bridge Inn in Rehoboth on one of those April days that finally feels like spring.
They found us through Grace's childhood best friend, who coordinates weddings for a living. When someone who has seen that many wedding days sends her best friend your way, it means something. Grace and Karl are both in their forties, deeply themselves and obviously right for each other - you could feel it within minutes of meeting them. They trusted us easily, laughed easily and had zero interest in a day that felt like anyone else's.
Five Bridge Inn sits on a wooded preserve in Rehoboth - an 18th-century inn with miles of trails, open pastures and no shortage of places to shoot. It was the right venue for them in every way.
The morning
before everything begins.
Grace and Karl each got ready at the inn, in separate rooms, with the smallest possible bridal parties - her sister on her side, his son and daughter on his. Grace had an excited nervousness to her all morning, the kind that comes from actually wanting the day to arrive. Karl was relaxed and easy right up until the first look, when something shifted and the calm gave way to something much more real.
The moment
it all becomes real.
They married outside on a genuinely beautiful April day, surrounded by the inn's open grounds. Seven of Grace's closest friends sang together during the ceremony - not a hired ensemble, just people who love her, and it showed. Guests took turns placing cords across Grace and Karl's hands, tied together one by one until the officiant completed the knot - a handfasting that made the phrase "tying the knot" feel earned for the first time. And then there was the flower man - a grown adult in a fanny pack, stationed at the aisle, flinging petals directly into guests' faces as they walked past. The whole room was laughing before the ceremony even began. When it was over, Grace and Karl trotted back down the aisle to a Monty Python theme, coconut gallop included - a joke we didn't catch in the moment, which Grace found appropriately amusing.
Just the two
of them.
We started with a first look and spent the rest of the portrait session roaming the property - there's no shortage of ground to cover at Five Bridge. The highlight for Grace was unquestionably the alpacas. She lit up the moment we got near them in a way that had nothing to do with posing for a camera. There was also a quieter moment before the ceremony - Grace with a man who has been a father figure to her in every way that matters. We won't say more than that, except that it was the kind of photograph we don't take very often, and we're grateful we were there for it.
Where the night
takes over.
The seating chart was Muppet-themed. Of course it was. The reception was fully, completely them from start to finish. But the moment we'll carry from this day came when the DJ stopped the room and spoke - a quiet, careful speech about what it means to show up for someone who isn't your own. We already knew what was coming, so the camera was already on him - the man who had been Grace's father figure for most of her life, who had no idea a dance had been planned in his honor. He was in tears almost immediately. So was the room. So were we. That dance was the heart of the entire day.
